Critics Review
What can I say about Jarred Fell that I already haven’t? I saw him at the Gala and he was unexpectedly brilliant. I saw him at Le Comique and he was one of the best there. I had high hopes for him when I attended his full show on Thursday, and I wasn’t disappointed. I don’t know how old he is, or what he’d been doing before he became a comic, but I do know that he is quite simply born to do this.
His humour isn’t for everyone, it can be a little dark, and the audience did do their ‘oooooh’ noise for when it’s a bit much, even for them, more than once. (Through the last few weeks, I’ve learned to quite enjoy that noise, as I know that everyone in the audience is slightly squirming, but also in full anticipation of what the comedian is going to do or say next.) Fell does magic tricks, some gross, some funny, some a little weird but they all work well into the theme of the show – Freakshow. He even had a cross-dresser on stage singing about lady-bits using hilarious slang names. (Cameron Clayton, look him up.)
I think some of the ‘volunteers’ Jarred pulled onstage to help him with his tricks even surprised him, including the girl who was so drunk or high that she was staggering around and breaking his props. He never faltered though, and proved that he can work the crowd, make obscene sexually ambiguous remarks and control the intoxicated woman all while having quite an angelic face and sweet disposition.
Fell is a natural entertainer and the format of his magic show is a great platform for him. I can’t wait until he gets bigger and starts using other props; think a tiger could fit in quite nicely. Fell delivers a smooth show that is uncomfortable and enjoyable in equal measures.
