If there’s one thing Jarred Christmas loves more than comedy, it’s dance. So deep runs this love, in fact, that his new show fuses his standup routine with random bursts of the stuff, with some pretty serious shapes being thrown in between anecdotes about World War II and fatherhood. His set may not be wildly outlandish, but it does have the occasional element of surprise, and this is not to be underestimated.

Christmas covers reasonably safe ground: his “sexy” Kiwi accent, life with two young children and the early days of courtship between his grandparents. This isn’t earth shatteringly new territory, but for the most part it works, particularly the material centring on his own familial life. Revealing his criteria for the perfect mate (“someone who eats cheeseburgers and can protect me in a fight”) and a distaste for waxed men, Christmas is engaging in his vitriol. Where things slow down, though, are during the repeated anecdotes about WWII, which interrupt an otherwise linear narrative. The links made between present and past feel tenuous at times, and this hinders the pace of what is otherwise an incredibly energetic set.

A gag (literally) about accidentally fellating an Irish setter as a teen soon sees the laughs rolling back in, and the finale is undeniably amongst the greatest to ever grace the Fringe (just make sure you’re sitting in the front two rows). Christmas is well on par with a number of his comic contemporaries, and a few more years on the circuit should see him receiving the acclaim he deserves.

Jarred Christmas has got some moves!! With the most energetic entrance of the festival I was pretty sure we were in for a good night.

This returning Kiwi is now based in the UK so it’s a treat to see him in Auckland. He began with some fun audience interactions, including giving a guy in the front row about 12 nicknames.

Christmas uses the majority of the show as a Q&A session as he invites the audience to ask him anything. After a hesitant start we get into the flow with some clever and quick answers from our comedic host.

I love improvised comedy and this show structure means you will always get an original and bespoke performance. The topics he covered included his fashion style, TV shows, foot hygiene and heroics as well as Jarred giving some manly advice to an 18 year old. It appeared we had so much fun he forgot to ‘tell any jokes’.

However Jarred weaves in his clever stand up when you feel like you’re just chatting. He has a love of HipHop, is an excellent dancer and can tell a romantic tale about his grandparents during WWII. Quite a repertoire! Rest assured he definitely has more than seven jokes.

I particularly loved his take on fatherhood and the fantastic story about a rather awkward close encounter with a dog. His HipHop passion comes out not only in his intro music but in a wonderfully witty rap lyric evaluation.

Jarred Christmas’s Let’s Go MoFo! shows just how much material he has in his head. This structure allows him to just unleash the funnies when prompted. He literally has an answer for everything! (and a great knowledge of WWII fighter planes).

Joy to the World (or at least to the Wellington bit of it), Jarred Christmas has come! The comedian who may single-handedly revive a fashion for huge sideburns and western shirts is playing Downstage.

It's not an easy comedy venue – decades of Chekov hang in the air – far safer to play a bar where the atmosphere is all beer and fun. But Wellington reserve is no match for his charm as he bursts onto the stage and energises the belly laughs right out of us.

In this show, Christmas explores such diverse topics as parenthood, hip hop, café culture and heroism: ample material for an hour's worth of laughs. We hear tales of early rising toddlers, why middle class white men aren't good rappers, posh café naming conventions and the perils of being a hero. It can be a tough job, fraught with mishaps that are so improbable they must be true!

Let's face it, you'll probably go and see Jarred Christmas because you know how funny he is from his numerous TV appearances in NZ. So you already know why you would like to see him live. And you won't be disappointed. He is an appealing bundle of energy, humour (of course), warmth, crudity and a bit of shouty too.

An hour with Jarred Christmas is an hour of many moods - he can be funny at different volumes. What is consistent is his easy rapport with an audience, with whom he interacts hilariously. And the end – oh my – it is a perfect ending to a feel-good show.

An absolutely Must-See highlight of this Comedy Fest.

After seeing Jarred Christmas on many different television shows as well as watching him host a myriad of shows for Dave's Leicester Comedy Festival, I had really high hopes for this show.

And let's be honest, this show lived up to those hopes and then some.

Advertised as an hour of comedy, what we actually got was just over two hours of hilarity from the man with the sideburns.

Jokes came thick and fast with the kind of confident delivery that only Jarred Christmas can muster. His unique blend of stories about his life and sheer random jokes had the crowd howling with laughter.

Christmas has this talent of making the crowd feel like they are completely part of the show and now many comics these days have that.

The show started with Christmas coming out on to the stage, leaping off and then doing the Haka dance in front of one of the members of the crowd at the front. From then on we all knew what to expect.

One of the running jokes throughout the evening was that he'd wanted to do a night of comedy and dance but everyone only wanted the comedy so at random intevals he would break in to dance. We had the dance from Dirty Dancing, a dance set to 'Eye of the Tiger' by Survivor and he even did the dance to 'Gangnam Style' as well, which to be honest had me crying with laughter.

Christmas then came out for the second half of the show. He'd apparently planned for one hour instead of two but you wouldn't have known that from the confident performance he continued to give. Bordering between more jokes, taking questions from the crowd as well as getting the audience to join in, the unplanned half was hilarious.

All in all, this was a great night and I would definitely come out to see Jarred Christmas again and I urge you guys to do the same.
