New Zealand Comedy Trust Presents

Jeff Achtem & Zoe Evershed

Shadow Play Workshops

In this integrated craft and performance workshop, children will create their own individual shadow character made from scraps, crafts, tinsel, tape and teddy beer fluff. Participants will then be guided in performance techniques to draw emotion and drama out of the characters they make.

Workshops run 50 minutes and consist of:

  • A short demonstration of some shadow puppets from Jeff's show; Sticks, Stones, Broken Bones
  • Demonstration of how to construct the "talking thumb" style puppet
  • Working time for participants, with one-on-one assistance from Jeff and Zoe
  • Play time in the spotlights, and theatre games
  • Summary and tips on doing shadow puppetry at home

Touring to festivals around the globe, Canadian-born Jeff Achtem has built a loyal audience for his unique brand of shadow puppetry created from found objects. This is Jeff's first trip to NZ, as he brings his charming and award-winning shadow puppetry show, Sticks, Stones, Broken Bones to the NZ International Comedy Festival. Achtem explains his DIY shadow puppetry as a meek rebuttal to the over-stimulation of audiences in this internet age.

Give shadow puppetry a try yourself with Jeff Achtem's 'Shadow Play Workshops'. Receive a $5 discount when you book a Workshop ticket with your Sticks, Stones, Broken Bones ticket.
