Introducing the TV3 People's Choice Award

On the 17th April 2013 Back

We think New Zealand consistently rocks it on a global scale when it comes to providing the finest and funniest comedians, so each and every year we celebrate these outstanding individuals with the Billy T Award and The FRED Award – but now, together with our broadcast partner TV3, we’re also giving the ‘power to the people’.

The NZ International Comedy Festival (26 April – 19 May), celebrating it’s 21st birthday, is proud to announce the creation of a new award category – the TV3 People’s Choice Award.

In short: we want you to have your say and tell us, as a nation, which Kiwi comedian or comedians in the Comedy Festival you want to show your support for – with the power of your vote at

Like in every good democracy, every vote counts, and every vote you make (you can vote once per day) gives you a chance to send your favourite Kiwi comedian (and a mate) on an all-expenses paid trip to one of the world’s largest comedy experiences – the Melbourne International Comedy Festival.

And the best bit? One lucky voter and a mate will be heading along too.

It’s simple – we love local comedy,” says Rachel Jean, Head of Comedy and Drama, MediaWorks TV, “from established shows like 7 Days to the upcoming Ben & Steve: World Famous In…, it’s something we can never get enough of, so we’re proud to be able to support this award and our local comedy scene.

The voting campaign will launch April 18 and runs until May 17, with the winner announced alongside the Billy T and FRED Awards at Last Laughs, Sunday 19th May.

For a good sample of what New Zealand comedy has to offer, the Comedy Gala, broadcast Sunday 28th April at 8:30pm on TV3 will provide one of the finest nights in on-air laughter – guaranteed.
