These may still be ‘unprecedented times’, but a bit of laughter is the best medicine!* Prepare yourself for a homegrown spread of gourmet giggles at the Best Foods Christmas Comedy Gala, hosted by the hilarious Pax Assadi, on Saturday 7 November at The Civic.
A superstar of the Kiwi comedy scene, Urzila Carlson joins the line up! Since starting her comedy career 12 years ago, Urzila has shot to superstardom, with her own Netflix special Overqualified Loser, a slew of awards and last year becoming the highest selling comedian ever at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival. Her trademark deadpan humour and cheeky wit have won her fans around the globe. You don't want to miss this world-class act, live on stage this November.
Star of stage, screen and the airwaves, Guy Williams brings his deadpan humour to the Gala, alongside the insightful, sardonic and very, very clever star of Mean Mums Cori Gonzalez-Macuer. We’re stoked to welcome the host of our 2019 Last Laughs and Rhys Mathewson who was the youngest winner of the Fred Award for Best NZ show, plus our very first international guest, Australian comedian Laura Davis! One of Aotearoa’s busiest comics, and co-host of NZ’s most successful podcast The Worst Idea of All Time, Tim Batt will be making an appearance, as will NZ comedy legend Tarun Mohanbhai. And bringing his striking storytelling skills to the Civic stage, it’s Nick Gibb!
We are absolutely honoured to welcome national treasures and comedy legends, Dames Jools and Lynda Topp, The Topp Twins, to the Best Foods Christmas Comedy Gala. A regular on Have You Been Paying Attention, 7 Days and The Project, and co-host of TVNZ’s Last Dad Standing, Melanie Bracewell brings her special brand of hilarity to the line-up. Winner of last year’s prestigious Fred award for Best Show, and host of critically acclaimed RNZ podcast Eating Fried Chicken In The Shower, James Nokise delivers his celebrated comedic storytelling to the stage. Host of Have You Been Paying Attention and The Great Kiwi Bake Off, Hayley Sproull transitions from 2019 backstage Comedy Gala host to on-stage performer for a hilarious musical performance. 2019 Fred Award nominee, TV star and one third of the hilarious Frickin’ Dangerous Bro trio, James Roque delivers his whip-smart and hilarious brand of comedy. Making their Comedy Gala debuts, SNORT improv queen, two-time Billy T Nominee and self-professed Cat Lady in Waiting Donna Brookbanks hits the stage, and Paul Douglas, winner of Best Live show and Best Gag at the 2019 NZ Comedy Guild Awards, brings his Westie charm to The Civic.
But wait, there’s so much more! The multiple comedy award-winning Ben Hurley comes in hot from his nationwide tour, alongside razor-sharp wonderful wahine, and regular on The Project, Justine Smith. 2019’s NZICF Directors Choice winner Eli Matthewson is back, and local powerhouse-pop-duo Two Hearts (Laura Daniel x Joseph Moore) bring their musical satire and spectacular dance moves to the stage. And last but definitely not least, The Fan Brigade will treat audiences to their publicly and critically acclaimed musical comedy.
And there it all is, 21 of Aotearoa’s best comedians, all in one stunning night at The Civic – it’s set to be NZ’s comedy’s biggest night of the year! Tickets are all sold out, but snag a spot on the waitlist and be the first to know about any last minute tickets!
Proceeds from the show will be invested by the NZ Comedy Trust into further development of the comedy industry.

Ensure you're purchasing genuine tickets via our ticketing partner Ticketmaster. Websites like Viagogo and scalpers on social media have been heavily targetting NZ events recently and ripping Kiwis off by charging a huge markup for tickets that may not even exist. We definitely don't want you getting ripped off by a Swiss ticket scalping giant, so make sure you're only buying tickets via ticketmaster.co.nz
